Seventh and Eighth Grade Mathematics
Information Sheet for Students and Parents
Mathematics is a subject that tends to illicit strong emotions for many
students. Most students enjoy math while a few are quick to say that they
hate it. Success in a particular grade level is not only dependent upon
learning the new material, but in applying the skills and concepts that were
taught in previous grades. In an effort to maximize the success of every
student at Holy Guardian Angels Regional School, I would like to take a few
moments to explain the procedures that I follow.
* Homework - Homework is assigned nightly, typically from Monday
through Friday. The purpose of homework is to give students the opportunity
to practice the new skills that were introduced in class that day as well as
to review previously learned concepts.
* Materials - Students need to bring their textbook, homework planner,
and copybook to class. All work must be done in pencil. Students will also
need a ruler, red pen and loose leaf paper. On occasion, students will need
calculators or colored pencils.
* Homework and Class Participation Grade - Every student starts the
trimester with a 100% as their homework grade. Five points are deducted for each missing assignment. Please note that I do not give credit for homework that the student forgets to bring to class, homework that is incomplete, or homework that does not have the appropriate work shown. I believe that reviewing homework in class is an important part of the learning process.
* Remediation - I am available almost every day during our lunch/recess
period to review skills and concepts with students who would like to work on
practice problems. If a student would like help, he or she should see me in
the morning to get a pass. Also, I am available every morning (except on
Wednesdays when the faculty has prayer) at 7:30 to answer any math questions.
Please note: I am always willing to provide extra help for students who are putting forth effort and being cooperative in class. Unfortunately, I do not have time in my schedule to accommodate students who waste class time by being disruptive. Please contact me if you are interested in individual tutoring after school. The fee for this year will be $15.00 a 45 minute session.
* Projects and Graded Assignments - From time to time, I assign
projects or work that I tell the students that I will collect and grade. When
I say that I will collect it and grade it, I mean it. This work generally
counts as a test grade. Five points will be deducted for each day the assignment
is late.
* Quizzes and Tests - Tests are usually scheduled every chapter. Quizzes are scheduled weekly. Daily maintenance assignments count as a quiz grade.
* Prodigy - Prodigy is a curriculum-aligned math game that students can access without charge at school and at home. It provides students with review and practice. Students have the opportunity to work on it each week at school. They are also encouraged to work on it at home. Each week’s Prodigy work is averaged together as a weekly quiz grade.
* Grading - The following formula is applied to calculate a student's
trimester grade in 7.1 and 8.1:
50% - tests
30% - quizzes
10% - homework
10% - class participation
* Grading - The following formula is applied to calculate a student's trimester grade in 7.2 and 8.2:
50% - quizzes
30% - tests
10% - homework
10% - class participation
* Absences - Students who are absent due to illness should see me the
day they return in order to get the work they missed. The missed assignments
are due within an e qual number of days of the student's return to school. For example, a three day absence equals three days to make up the work. Parents should contact me directly if their child will be out due to prolonged illness or extended vacation so that individual arrangements can be made.
* Contacting Me: You may call the school at 610-929-4124 and leave a
message. I will always try to return your call during the day or that same
evening. You may also e-mail me at [email protected] (school e-mail
account) or through Option C. I try to check my e-mail on a daily basis.
